Lots of Goodies for Mother’s Day at Saturday’s market!

Lots of Goodies from Chocolique and Anna’s Homestyle Baking for Mother’s Day for you at tomorrow’s market.

Other stalls will have things too. Or what about Membership of the Market if she’s becoming a regular?

Stallholders for tomorrow are the two mentioned above, Gina’s Kitchen & Field Berries (they’ll have chysanthemums), Feather & Peck, H Kouzina Mas (savoury only), From the Grain, The Coffee Stall, with Fleurieu Milk And Yoghurt Company products, Garden candy (herbs for Mum?), Virgara’s Garden, Strout Farm, VICTORFISH and yes, Con and Harry are back! Lilyarra Cheeses is coming fortnightly now.

Please remember that there has been no easing of Covid-19 restrictions as effects the market, so shop & go, single shoppers prefferred, no families, maintain social distancing at all times, and if you touch it you buy it.

Planting Out:  (Growing your own food)

During these troubled and unprecedented times it is interesting to note the rush for vegetable seedlings and seed. However, it is sad to see to people buying the wrong varieties. Pumpkin, tomato, beans and corn will not grow at this time of year. They need to be planted in late spring, early summer.

Autumn is a good time to plant certain varieties which will yield within 6 to 8 weeks. The soil is warm and we are still experiencing 11 hours of sunshine. So, it’s time to get busy.

Day 1: Prepare your soil. Peg out a patch of 3 metres x 4 metres & dig through. Removing weeds, rocks etc. Apply some blood & bone and (Rapid Raiser*) these are both organic. If your soil is poor add some complete mineral mix. Rake through and water well.

Day 2: Plant radish seed, bok choy seed, hakurei (Japanese turnip) beetroot seed or seedlings. Seed tapes (Yates*) are a good idea, the seed is nicely spaced on the paper tape. The radishes, bok choy and hakurei will be ready to begin harvesting within 6 to 8 weeks, the beetroot 4 weeks later. Water in well and water daily depending upon the weather.

Day 7: Your seedlings will begin to emerge in nice neat rows. It is important to keep the weeds down and keep your seedlings moist. In a few weeks they will toughen up. You can start to give your plants a liquid fertilizer using a watering can. If you have the space you can plant climbing peas, snow peas and sugar snap peas. Add a bit of dolomite to the soil, these legumes like sweet soil. You will need to make a trellis or some pyramids for the peas to climb up on. 

The reason for climbing peas is that they are easier to pick and less prone to mildew.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention… silverbeet or rainbow chard. It is the vegetable that continues to give & it will keep going during the depth of winter. The more you pick, the more you get. Seedlings are hard to get, so you might need to start with seed. Use as you would for spinach. It contains great nutritional values. Think veg lasagne, quiche, spanakopita, canneloni etc.

Gardening is a great activity for the entire family and it will keep you (and your family) fed for months.

VHFM Open this Saturday Ready for Mother’s Day

We are open as usual on Saturday. Con and Harry will be back with us. Whoo hoo 😁

There’ll be no change to the Covid-19 restrictions that have been in place for some time now.

Please continue to observe them so that we can keep the market running.

Shop & Go.
Single shoppers if possible, no families.
Maintain social distancing at all times.
Pick up produce by a bag, if you touch it you buy it.

Just a tad chilly, quite pleasant really.

Kate is back at Chocolique, some great ideas for Mother’s Day next Sunday.

Dora and Bona have a great range of sweet and savoury at H Kouzina Mas.

Gala, Pink lady, Grannies and Fuji apples at Gina’s Kitchen & Field Berries, and Gerard has his semi hard goats cheese at Lilyarra Cheeses, plus the delicious soft cheeses.

Social distancing restrictions continue to be in place.

Shop and go, single shoppers please, no families. If you touch fresh produce you buy it.

Stallholders for tomorrow’s market will be Gina’s Kitchen & Field Berries, From the Grain, Feather & Peck, Lilyarra Cheeses, The Coffee Stall, including Fleurieu Milk And Yoghurt Company, Anna’s Homestyle Baking, H Kouzina Mas, Virgara’s Garden, Garden candy, VICTORFISH, Strout Farm and Chocolique, great to have you back Kate 😁.

Con and Harry are having another week off, and will be back next week.

Again, please remember we are still trading under social distancing restrictions. SA is doing so well, let’s all keep making the effort to keep up that excellent record.

Were you at your driveway at 6.00am? We were the only ones in our street.

ANZAC Biscuits from Anna’s Homestyle Baking are looking good.

Francesco at Virgara’s Garden has these gorgeous Rouge Vif d’Etampes pumpkins, plus his usual range of fantastic fresh veggies.

Strout Farm have cold pressed olive oil in 500ml, 1L and 2L bottles.

It’s a lovely morning, please continue to follow social distancing, shop and go, no takeaway food to be eaten within the market.

ANZAC Day VHFM Saturday 25th April 8am-12.30pm

Stallholders at tomorrow’s ANZAC Day market will be Gina’s Kitchen & Field Berries, From the Grain, Feather & Peck, VICTORFISH, The Coffee Stall (#Jelly, including Fleurieu Milk And Yoghurt Company products), Lilyarra Cheeses, Anna’s Homestyle Baking, Strout Farm (Almonds), Virgara’s Garden and Garden candy.
So in from last week are Victorfish and Lilyarra Cheeses, out are Chocolique and H Kouzina Mas, both will be back next week, along with Con and Harry.

Covid-19 restrictions continue to apply. Single shoppers are preferred, no families.

Maintain social distancing of 1.5m, shop and go. When selecting produce use a bag. If you touch it without a bag you buy it. The stallholders will select the produce for you if you prefer.

Thank you for your continued support of our market, helping us to continue to trade during this difficult time, keeping you supplied with the fresh produce you have enjoyed being able to buy for over 11 years every Saturday morning.

We’re back again tomorrow, a cool one, maybe a spot of rain.

Please keep doing what you have been doing so well, shop and go, maintaining the 1.5m social distancing. No families, single shoppers preferred.
If there are couples, one only at a stall at a time. Queue at stalls to keep up the social distancing. Pick up produce by a bag, if you touch it you buy it. If you prefer, ask the stallholders to pick it up for you.

All the Farmers Markets that are operating in SA are doing so under these very clear directions, it allows us to still bring our produce to you as safely as possible for you, our members and customers, and for our stallholders in this Coronavirus lockdown period.
