Francesco Virgara Interview – October 2016

Q: How long have you been at the Victor Harbor Farmers Market?

A: With the Victor Harbor Farmers Market? Since the 1st day, nearly eight years. We have been with Willunga for about 13 years and Adelaide Farmers Market since their first days.

Q: Where are you from? And how long have you been in Australia?

A: South Calabria Italy. I have been here since 2000. I came for a holiday to visit family 25 years ago and now I live here.

Q: Where do you live on the Fleurieu Peninsula?

A: Aldinga.

Q: What is your favourite thing to grow?

A: That is hard to answer. Cauliflower, there are lots of different ones, white, Romanesco, purple. People don’t believe but everyone can grow it but only very few people can grow it well.

Q: I have to ask even though I think the answer will be obvious but what is your favourite season?

A: Spring! Of course! I’m busy planting in the garden. Spring is like being a teenager.

Q: What is your favourite food and your favourite place to eat in South Australia?

A: Fish, shellfish! And Salvatore Pepe is my favourite chef. His restaurant is Pepe Cucina. The best.

Q: What are you most proud of in your garden?

A: I’m proud of everything when they’re coming good. When you grow something you do the best you can and put everything into it so when it comes good, I am very proud. When something doesn’t work in my garden, do not come near me! It makes me so cross!

Q:  Lastly Francesco, what is your favourite thing about the Victor Harbor Farmers Market?

A: It has the most friendly environment. What I like is the relationship between stall holders and our customers. Everyone likes everyone.

You can find Francesco at his stall ‘Virgara’s Garden’ selling beautiful seasonal vegetables every Saturday morning rain, hail or shine.
Try and get in early though as Francesco has a reputation for selling out!
